Kitchen Tiles

Designing every element of your new kitchen is exciting but can be a little nerve-wracking too. You’re making decisions that you will have to live with for a good few years, so you don’t want to get it wrong. The kitchen tiles that you choose will be one of the main features, and they need to be not just beautiful but also practical. Whether you’re choosing floor tiles, wall tiles, or just something for a backsplash, you want to pick tiles that fit in with the rest of your kitchen.

When you’re selecting your new kitchen tiles, there are a few different factors that you will probably want to think about to achieve the best results.

Consider natural light

During the day, the natural light that comes into your kitchen will affect the way that your tiles look. Of course, the light won’t always look the same, as it will change depending on the time of year, time of day, and weather. However, you can assess where the natural light comes into the kitchen and how much light you usually get from outside. If you don’t often get much sunshine in your kitchen, you might want to avoid tiles that are too dark, opting instead for lighter shades. Polished & gloss tiles can help to emphasise the light, whereas matt tiles won’t capture the light as much.

Think about lighting

As well as considering natural light in your kitchen, you can think about your use of artificial lighting. You’re probably going to be using your lighting a lot, including in the evenings, on winter mornings, and on overcast days. Your use of lighting combined with your tiles could make your kitchen bright and airy or give it a warmer and cosier feel.

Fit tiles into the kitchen colour scheme

Of course, the overall kitchen colour scheme is definitely something to keep in mind when choosing tiles. However, your tiles don’t have to be a match for any of the other colours you’ve chosen. You could pick some contrasting colours if you want your tiles to stand out. Your tiles could be in an accent colour, or you might choose them in a background colour to let other elements of the kitchen stand out.

Choose the right kitchen tiles for the room size

Don’t forget to consider the size of your kitchen when choosing tiles. If your tiles are too big or perhaps too busy in a small kitchen, it could make the kitchen look even smaller. The layout and pattern of your tiles can also make a difference to how big the kitchen appears to be. Using larger tiles in a small space can actually give the appearance of opening up a space.
